My work is essentially an investigation of the human condition. Sectioned off compositions, similar to the structures of David Salle’s early paintings, involve overlapping and interlocking obscured images; networks of implied moral orientations suggesting an epistemic taxonomy of the abstractions of human behavior and glimpses into our current collective human dilemmas. The work is purposefully intellectually rigorous and minimizes overt feeling, prioritizing inquiry over immediate emotional response. Through this method, I have come to understand that meaning is found through intuition and eventual evaluation, not merely symbolic recognition. Thus the structure of these paintings is intended to reveal a process, asking a viewer to engage with my work as I do in creating it, in order to experience and understand my interest in a broader philosophical conversation that ultimately asks whether we are living during a cultural shift in which the pursuit of knowledge is fundamentally irrelevant.
